Writing math in abstracts and comments
Titles, abstracts, comments, and the “Comments” field of a paper are typeset with KaTeX, which understands most everyday LaTeX math.
Delimiters
| Style | Write | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Inline | $S = A/4G$ or \(S = A/4G\) | $S = A/4G$ |
| Display | $$\int_0^\infty e^{-x^2}\,dx = \tfrac{\sqrt\pi}{2}$$ | $$\int_0^\infty e^{-x^2}\,dx = \tfrac{\sqrt\pi}{2}$$ |
| Calligraphic | $\mathcal{N}=4$ | $\mathcal{N}=4$ |
Tips
- Dollar signs in prices: write
\$5, or put a space after the opening$(a lone$5next to$10is not treated as math). - Math is never evaluated as HTML.
<and>are safe; you can also write\ltand\gt. - If something does not render, the raw TeX stays visible instead of disappearing. Check the supported functions at katex.org/docs/supported.html.
- The submission form and comment box show a live preview.
Abstract text
Abstracts are plain text with LaTeX math. Leave a blank line between paragraphs. Web addresses are linked automatically; HTML tags are not interpreted.
